Avoiding Foreign Bodies in the Eye

Eye Safety in Scrap Metal Yards: Preventing Foreign Body Injuries

Working in a scrap metal yard presents significant risks to eye safety. Flying metal fragments, dust, rust particles, and debris can cause serious eye injuries that may result in permanent vision loss. Understanding these hazards and taking proper precautions is essential for every worker.

Common Hazards

Scrap metal operations generate numerous airborne threats to eye safety. Cutting and grinding metal produces high-velocity sparks and sharp metal fragments. Hammering, crushing, or moving scrap can dislodge rust flakes and metal shavings. Even seemingly routine tasks like sorting materials can kick up dust containing metal particles that easily penetrate the eye.

Wind is an often-overlooked hazard in outdoor yards, carrying fine metal dust and debris across work areas and affecting workers who aren’t directly involved in hazardous operations.

Essential Protection

Eye protection is not optional in scrap metal environments. Safety glasses with side shields provide baseline protection for general yard work, but many tasks require more robust solutions. Face shields should be used when grinding, cutting, or torch work creates heavy spark showers. For tasks generating significant dust or fine particles, wraparound safety goggles offer superior protection by sealing around the eyes.

All protective eyewear must meet ANSI Z87.1 standards and should be inspected regularly for scratches or damage that could compromise protection or visibility.

Best Practices

Beyond wearing proper equipment, workers should maintain awareness of their surroundings. Never walk directly behind someone using grinding or cutting equipment. Keep a safe distance from active operations, and ensure adequate barriers or screens are in place to protect nearby workers.

Remove contact lenses before working in dusty environments, as particles can become trapped beneath lenses and cause corneal abrasions. If you wear prescription glasses, use over-the-glasses safety goggles or prescription safety glasses rather than relying on regular eyewear.

Emergency Response

Despite precautions, foreign bodies can still enter the eye. If this occurs, do not rub the eye, as this can cause further damage. Avoid attempting to remove embedded objects yourself. Flush the eye gently with clean water if a loose particle is present, but seek immediate medical attention for any object that remains, causes pain, or affects vision.

Your eyesight is irreplaceable. In a scrap metal yard where hazards are constant, proper eye protection and vigilance are your best defense against preventable injuries.
