Using the PASS Method: Fire Safety for Scrap Metal Workers
Working with scrap metal puts you around multiple fire hazards daily—cutting torches, welding equipment, grinding sparks, and flammable materials. Knowing how to properly use a fire extinguisher could save your life, your coworkers’ lives, and prevent major property damage.
The PASS method is a simple four-step technique that works under pressure when seconds count:
P – Pull the pin. This unlocks the extinguisher’s operating lever. The pin is usually located at the top of the unit with a plastic or metal tamper seal. Pull it straight out.
A – Aim low. Point the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire, not at the flames themselves. Fires need fuel to burn, and that fuel is at the base. Aiming at flames just scatters them.
S – Squeeze the lever. Press the handle firmly to discharge the extinguishing agent. Release it to stop. You control the flow.
S – Sweep from side to side. Move the spray across the base of the fire in a sweeping motion. Keep the extinguisher aimed at the base and continue until the fire is completely out. Watch for re-ignition.
Critical reminders for metal workers: Always maintain a clear escape route behind you. If the fire grows beyond a small, contained area, evacuate immediately and call emergency services. Metal dust fires (especially aluminum or magnesium) require Class D extinguishers—standard ABC extinguishers won’t work and can make things worse. Know which type of extinguisher you need for your specific work area, and make sure it’s inspected and accessible. Practice the PASS method during safety drills so it becomes automatic in an emergency.
