Fire Extinguisher Use Training

Using the PASS Method for Fire Extinguisher Operation in Scrap Yards

When a fire breaks out in a scrap yard facility, quick and proper use of a fire extinguisher can mean the difference between a minor incident and a catastrophic event. All scrap yard employees should be familiar with the PASS method—a simple four-step technique for effective fire extinguisher operation.

What is the PASS Method?

PASS is an acronym that stands for:

P – Pull the pin. This breaks the tamper seal and allows you to discharge the extinguisher. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you.

A – Aim low. Point the extinguisher nozzle at the base of the flames, not at the smoke or the middle of the fire. The goal is to extinguish the fuel source.

S – Squeeze the handle slowly and evenly. This releases the extinguishing agent. Maintain control of the extinguisher at all times.

S – Sweep from side to side. Move the nozzle back and forth across the base of the fire, covering the entire area until the flames are completely out.

Special Considerations for Scrap Yard Fires

Scrap yard environments present unique fire hazards. Metal debris, combustible materials, hydraulic fluids, and vehicle components can all fuel fires. Employees should:

  • Know the location of all fire extinguishers on site
  • Understand which type of extinguisher to use for different fire classes
  • Never fight a fire that is too large or spreading rapidly—evacuate and call emergency services
  • Be aware that metal fires may require specialized Class D extinguishers
  • Always maintain a clear escape route when fighting any fire

Regular training on the PASS method ensures that all scrap yard personnel can respond quickly and effectively when fires occur, protecting both lives and property.
