How To Spot A Fire

Toolbox Talk: Fire Awareness & Prevention in the Scrap Yard

Fires can spread fast in a scrap yard because of the wide range of flammable materials around. Stay alert and take these key steps to prevent and respond safely:

1. Recognize Fire Hazards:
Be aware of what can burn—oily rags, leftover fuel in tanks, rubber tires, plastics, insulation, wood pallets, and even fine metal dust or shavings. Knowing where these risks are helps prevent fires before they start.

2. Watch for Early Warning Signs:
Look for smoke (light or dark), heat, sparks, glowing embers, or strange burning smells. Fires can hide behind piles—watch for haze or color changes in the air.

3. Report Immediately:
If you see smoke or fire, tell your supervisor or Facility Manager right away. Don’t assume someone else has done it. Early reporting saves time and can prevent serious damage.

4. Warn Others:
Shout “FIRE!” so coworkers can move to safety. Keep evacuation routes clear at all times. Never risk your safety to check or fight a fire.

5. Use Fire Extinguishers Safely:
Only use an extinguisher if you’re trained and it’s safe to do so. Remember the PASS method:

  • Pull the pin
  • Aim at the base
  • Squeeze the handle
  • Sweep side to side

6. Evacuate if Needed:
If the fire grows or you feel unsafe, get out immediately. Life always comes before property.

Key Reminder:
Spot hazards, stay alert, report quickly, warn others, and never take risks. Quick action and awareness protect everyone on the yard.
