Metal Processors and Shredder/Baler Operators
Employees working in direct processing positions — those operating shredders, balers, shears, and torches — face some of the highest distraction-related risks in our facility. These are high-energy, high-consequence tasks where the machinery does not pause to wait for an operator’s attention to return. A momentary lapse near a shear or a baler can mean a serious injury with permanent consequences.

In the winter, this workflow tends to be relatively measured. As spring arrives, volume increases sharply. For scale house staff, we focus our seasonal distraction education on two key areas: data entry accuracy under increased volume, and the management of simultaneous communication channels. A scale house employee who is entering a ticket, speaking to a driver at the window, and monitoring the radio for a yard call is operating at or near cognitive capacity. Office staff process compliance documentation, manage regulatory submissions, coordinate contractor scheduling, and handle the communication infrastructure that keeps the operation running safely. Errors in these functions — a missed OSHA recordkeeping entry, a miscommunicated contractor arrival time, a misfiled environmental compliance document — can have downstream consequences that affect everyone. As spring increases administrative workload, distraction-related errors in these functions deserve attention.
Additionally, office staff often serve as the first point of contact for regulatory inspectors, vendors, and customers. Presenting a composed, attentive, informed face to those visitors — regardless of what the season is bringing personally — is part of our compliance posture. Step 3: Supervision Calibration and Observation Protocol
One of the most important steps in seasonal distraction management is communicating with front-line supervisors about what I need them to observe and how I need them to respond. Supervisors are the most proximate safety resource we have. They are on the floor, in the yard, and in the shop in ways that the EHS Manager cannot be continuously. Rather than attempting to suppress the social energy that spring brings — which is counterproductive and demoralizing — we channel it.
