Every year, workers and bystanders are seriously injured — or killed — by heavy equipment they never saw coming. In most of these incidents, the machine was operating normally. The operator was doing their job. The tragedy happened because of one preventable factor: the pedestrian was standing in a blind spot, and the operator had no way of knowing they were there.
This article defines what a blind spot is, explains how each type of heavy equipment creates unique and dangerous blind zones, and outlines what every person — operator or pedestrian — must do to stay safe.
WHAT IS A BLIND SPOT?
A blind spot is any area around a piece of heavy equipment that the operator cannot see — directly, through mirrors, or via cameras — while seated in the normal operating position. These invisible zones are not the result of inattention or poor driving. They are built into the physical design of the machine itself: the cab structure, the load being carried, the height of the mast or bucket, and the angles of mirrors all create areas where a person can be completely hidden from the operator’s view.
The critical danger: A pedestrian standing in a blind spot may feel completely visible to themselves and others. They can see the machine clearly. But the operator cannot see them at all. Unless eye contact is made — meaning the operator has visually confirmed the pedestrian’s presence and acknowledged it — that pedestrian must be treated as invisible to the operator.

UNDERSTANDING THE HAZARD BY EQUIPMENT TYPE
Each type of heavy equipment presents a distinct set of blind spots. Understanding where those zones are — and why they exist — is the first step to avoiding them.

| What Is It? A forklift is a powered industrial truck used to lift, carry, and place heavy loads using two forward-facing forks. Forklifts operate in warehouses, loading docks, scrap yards, manufacturing facilities, and outdoor staging areas. They travel in both forward and reverse and can carry loads stacked several feet above the operator’s head. Why Are Blind Spots Especially Dangerous? The most significant blind spot on a forklift is directly in front of the operator when the mast is raised or the load is elevated. A loaded forklift may completely block the operator’s forward sightline, forcing them to drive in reverse or navigate with severely limited visibility. The rear of the forklift also presents a large blind area — when traveling in reverse, the back of the machine swings outward during turns, and pedestrians standing close behind the rear corners can be struck without warning. The overhead guard structure also limits upward and diagonal visibility. Operators may not see a person crouching, kneeling, or standing just outside the edge of the load they are carrying. |

| What Is It? A skid steer is a compact, highly maneuverable piece of equipment with a rigid frame and lift arms that attach to a variety of tools including buckets, forks, grapples, and augers. It steers by varying the speed of wheels or tracks on each side, allowing it to pivot in place. Skid steers are common in construction, demolition, landscaping, and scrap yard operations. Why Are Blind Spots Especially Dangerous? The skid steer is one of the most hazardous machines for pedestrians because the operator’s cab visibility is severely limited on nearly all sides. The lift arms run alongside the cab on both the left and right, blocking lateral views. When the bucket or attachment is raised, it blocks the forward upper view. The rear of the machine is low to the ground, and because the engine and hydraulic components are mounted at the back, rear visibility is extremely poor. A person standing directly behind a skid steer — even just a few feet away — may be entirely invisible to the operator. The machine’s compact size also causes people to underestimate its power and pinch zones. Because a skid steer can spin almost in place, its swing radius is deceptively large and fast. |
| ▶ FRONT-END LOADER |
| What Is It? A front-end loader (also called a wheel loader) is a large piece of equipment with a wide bucket mounted at the front, used for scooping, carrying, and dumping large volumes of material such as dirt, gravel, scrap metal, and debris. Front-end loaders are large, heavy machines found on construction sites, mines, landfills, and scrap yards. Why Are Blind Spots Especially Dangerous? The front-end loader’s primary blind spot is directly in front of the machine when the bucket is lowered to ground level or in the carry position. The bucket itself is wide and tall, and at close range it completely eliminates the operator’s view of the ground directly ahead. A person who steps in front of a moving loader may vanish below the operator’s sightline before the operator can react. The rear blind spot is equally dangerous — when a loader backs up (which it does frequently to dump loads), the large engine compartment and counterweight block rearward vision significantly. Side blind spots exist at the base of the machine near the front and rear axles, where a person who stumbles or falls may not be visible at all. Due to the machine’s size and weight, stopping distances are long, and reaction time after spotting a hazard may not be sufficient to prevent a collision. |
WHY EYE CONTACT IS ESSENTIAL
Making eye contact with a heavy equipment operator is not a courtesy — it is a safety requirement. Eye contact serves as the only reliable confirmation that the operator has seen you and is aware of your location before the machine moves.
Simply being close to an operator, waving in the general direction of a cab, or assuming the operator saw you walk into the area is not enough. Operators are focused on their load, their path of travel, obstacles, and the task at hand. Peripheral movement may not register, especially with engine noise, vibration, and the cognitive demands of operating heavy equipment.
What counts as confirmed eye contact: The operator looks directly at you, and visibly acknowledges your presence — with a wave, a nod, a hand signal, or by stopping the machine. Until that acknowledgment happens, you have not been seen.

HOW TO STAY SAFE — FOR EVERYONE
For Pedestrians and Bystanders
Whether you are a coworker, a visitor, or a customer, the following rules apply any time you are near operating heavy equipment:
- Never enter the operating area of any heavy equipment without first making eye contact with the operator and receiving a clear acknowledgment
- Stay out of all designated machine travel lanes — treat them the same as a road with oncoming traffic
- Never walk behind a piece of equipment that is operating or has its engine running — the operator may move at any moment
- Do not approach a machine from the sides or front while it is in motion — wait for it to come to a complete stop
- Be especially alert when a machine is reversing — backup alarms are a warning to move away immediately, not a signal that you have been seen
- Never crouch, kneel, or sit near operating equipment — operators may not see you at reduced height
- Avoid using your phone, wearing headphones, or being distracted in areas where equipment is operating
- If you are unsure whether the operator has seen you, stop moving and wait — do not try to rush past
- Wear high-visibility clothing in any area where equipment is active
For Equipment Operators
Operators carry the greatest responsibility in preventing blind spot incidents. Every pre-operation check and every movement must account for pedestrians who may not be visible:
- Perform a complete 360-degree walk-around inspection before starting or moving any equipment — check all blind zones on foot
- Adjust all mirrors before operating and verify camera systems are functioning if equipped
- Sound your horn before moving — especially before reversing — and wait for pedestrians to clear the area
- Travel at slow, controlled speeds in areas where pedestrians may be present
- When your load blocks forward visibility, travel in reverse with a spotter present — never proceed blind
- Use a qualified spotter any time you must operate in a congested area or a location with limited sightlines
- If you lose sight of a pedestrian who was near your machine, stop immediately until their location is confirmed
- Never assume a pedestrian will move out of your path — stop the machine and wait for them to clear
- Communicate clearly with spotters using pre-established hand signals, and stop the moment a signal is unclear
For Spotters
A spotter is a trained person whose sole job is to guide equipment safely when the operator cannot see. When acting as a spotter:
- Maintain constant visibility to the operator at all times — if the operator loses sight of you, the machine stops
- Use clear, pre-agreed hand signals — never rely on verbal communication alone in noisy environments
- Never allow yourself to be positioned between the equipment and any fixed object or wall
- Your job is to guide the machine, not to watch the load — keep your eyes on the full movement zone
- If any unauthorized person enters the work zone, signal the operator to stop immediately
| REMEMBER | Blind spots do not care how experienced you are, how busy the day is, or how close you are to finishing a task. Every single movement around heavy equipment requires the same discipline: stop, make eye contact, get acknowledgment, then move. |
If the operator has not seen you, you are not safe.
Make eye contact. Every time. No exceptions.
Safety is not an interruption to the work — it IS the work.
